I’m into my third pair of Black Diamond Alpine Cork poles. I prefer carbon over aluminum for the overall shock absorption feel. Yes, I have broken tips. I always use flick lock style poles, because the length of the pole varies from situation to situation. Also, I like the foam secondary grip, just below the regular cork grip. Very handy for steep slopes.

Yes what you’re missing here is some experience bear hunters making some comments lots of hikers, but I can tell you that going to an earth sack in the morning at sunrise or setting it up at dusk is like setting up a bear bait site you’re number one defence should be sent free not a tear proof bag tear proof bag would be simply a back up. That goes for bear canisters if they’re not sent tight defeats the purpose

Kind of as a way to keep some of those many people who give up in the first week or two to actually stick it out, I always tell people NEVER decide to quit when you are cold, wet, or miserable. Take a day or two off, get some rest and warm up. If, when the sun comes back out, you still feel like quitting, then consider it. Or reduce your mileage for a few weeks. You probably spent a year or two dreaming and planning this trip, do not give up in a week, or a few days. I see a lot of people who give up during the first adversity that they encounter, when they could end up with a super enjoyable hike if they just make a few adjustments. Also, always remember, there is zero magic to being obsessed by doing a thru-hike. If you have made the arrangements for time and bought all the gear, stay out for 3, 4, or 5 months and get as far as you can while enjoying it. Personally, I did not care much for the hiking in New Hampshire anyway. When else will you have the opportunity to make such a long hike in the foreseeable future? While nice, there is nothing magical about making it to Katadin.

I'm interested in going up the Hunt Trail, then down the Saddle Trail to Chimney Pond bunkhouse, making do with a bivy bag and liner for bedding. The next day, I'd hike out to Roaring Brook Campground, find a way to get my heavier gear back from the Katahdin Stream ranger station, and stay one more night. The logistics are a little touchy, but the park will help me figure them out.

use a bear can, not a bear bag. there's no point in hanging your food. virtually all national and state parks with a bears in the US say that bears have figured out how to get hanging food.

Bigfoot! This is the video I have been looking for man! So very informative, thorough, to the point! This will help us for our trip on the JMT in August. If you don’t mind me asking, about how many miles were you logging a day? To go 120 miles without a resupply is amazing. Do you happen to have an itinerary laid out at all? We have 20 days dedicated to the trail, and based off the section, I feel like we can get between 12 to 15 miles a day done. Maybe even press out to that 17-18 miles a day possibly. My biggest fear is just not gauging I resupply points correctly, so any advice outside of that is extremely grateful. Thanks again brother!

I bought a pair of poles of £30 in Go Outdoors. I used them once in Scotland and one of them broke within 30 minutes. It was the mechanism which tightens them up which just stopped working leaving the pole useless. Am I wrong to think that the answer to my problem would be to find a one piece pole?

we are a couple of British veterans and are a double and single amputee we are coming to walk 130 miles over the Blue Ridge Mountains between 8 August and 20 August. we believe this will be a first for a double. If you see us say hello. and if you guys know if we can get a resupplied en route and how that would be good. Im going to be needing more than 4000 cal a day especially when climbing where I probably use about 3.8 times the energy you guys use. So I don't want to carry 10/12 days rations.

I had some aluminum poles for the last 25 years that finally broke (the locking mechanism, but pole still ok) - I'm shopping for new poles. I decided against carbon fiber because many people reported they shatter. Like you, I need to be able to put a lot of force on the pole to catch myself off balance. So the pole must be strong enough. I really want my next poles to last for another 25 years, so it seems I'll get another set of aluminum ones.
